Herbal Remedies for Hypothyroidism

Posted by admin | August 30th, 2010 in Hypothyroidism | No Comments »

Hypothyroidism, the underactive thyroid condition so many women suffer from, has been the subject of debate recently as to whether herbal remedies or synthetic hormones work best in treating it’s symptoms. Since the thyroid gland regulates metabolism, the symptoms of an underactive thyroid can range from fatigue to weight loss difficulties. Those with mild symptoms are increasingly turning to herbal remedies to combat their symptoms.

In order to alleviate hypothyroidism symptoms, natural herbal remedies are available that restore iodine levels, which are thought to stimulate the thyroid to produce the thyroid hormones necessary to regulate the bodies metabolism.

Other people are skipping supplements altogether and focusing entirely on dietary changes and lifestyle changes. A well-balanced diet is important for anyone, but especially so for those with underactive thyroid glands. A low-carb, high protein diet is thought to be beneficial to thyroid health. Stress also plays a part in keeping the thyroid gland from functioning properly. While stress is hard to avoid, some people are turning to exercises such as yoga to help themselves cope better with stress.

There is no definite answer as to whether herbal remedies or synthetic hormones are the best treatment for hypothyroidism. If you have mild symptoms, herbal remedies are safe, with o side effects. They are certainly worth a try before turning to pharmaceuticals.
